IRON INFUSIONS
At Western Obstetrics, we offer intravenous (IV) iron infusions in a comfortable, supportive environment to help restore healthy iron levels and improve energy and wellbeing.
Low iron (iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia) is a common condition, especially during pregnancy, after birth, or in women with heavy menstrual losses. It can cause symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, or reduced concentration. When oral iron supplements are not tolerated, ineffective, or when iron levels need to be corrected more quickly, an iron infusion can be a safe and effective solution.
Our experienced team administers iron infusions for both Western Obstetrics patients and external patients. External patients will need a referral from their GP or specialist, along with a copy of their most recent pathology results (especially your iron and full blood count) prior to booking.
Iron infusions deliver iron directly into your bloodstream, allowing your body to quickly replenish its iron stores. This can be particularly helpful when:
- Oral iron supplements cause side effects such as nausea or constipation
- Your iron levels remain low despite taking supplements
- You need to restore iron levels rapidly (for example, during pregnancy or before surgery)
- You are experiencing ongoing fatigue, dizziness, or low energy
- Before your infusion: Our clinical team will review your recent pathology results and confirm that an iron infusion is appropriate for you.
- During the infusion: A small drip is placed in your arm to deliver the iron directly into your bloodstream. The process usually takes 30–45 minutes, followed by a short observation period.
- Afterwards: Most people can return to normal activities soon after. Occasionally, mild side effects such as temporary fatigue, light-headedness, or a metallic taste in the mouth can occur.
- Our clinic provides a calm, supportive environment with staff experienced in women’s health and antenatal care.
- We ensure your comfort and safety throughout the infusion process.
- We coordinate care with your referring doctor or obstetrician to ensure ongoing management of your iron levels.
