Ground breaking research from the ORIGIN Project here in Perth has highlighted iron deficiency as one of the most common and important issues affecting infant health. Iron plays a vital role in early development, yet many young children are not getting enough, particularly during rapid growth stages when their iron needs are at their highest.
Iron deficiency is especially common in infants and toddlers due to the transition from a milk-based diet to family foods, which are often low in iron. Without adequate iron, children may develop iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anaemia, which can affect growth and overall wellbeing. More concerningly, untreated iron deficiency can contribute to neurodevelopmental, emotional and behavioural difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, attention problems and sleep issues. Research shows that some effects can persist into adulthood, even when anaemia isn’t present, making early detection and management essential.
