As well as being a time of intense excitement and happiness, the first few weeks at home with your new baby can also be confusing, exhausting and full of self-doubt… conflicting advice can make you feel certain that what you are doing is right!
At Western Obstetrics we are here to help you and your new family adjust to the demands of this new life.
We believe that when you receive care early, along with consistent advice, common difficulties during the postnatal period can be prevented.
We provide several postnatal services that will be invaluable to you in the first few weeks of your baby’s life and your journey into parenthood.
POSTNATAL CHECKINS
Our Midwives and GPOs can provide support with any adjustment that you may be having to your new role as a parent – Early Intervention. The appointments highlighted below will cover ongoing postnatal checks, including perineal and wound care, baby immunisations, weight and development assessments, family planning and contraceptive advice and provide referrals where necessary to other high-quality health professionals. Our postnatal services are privately billed (Mum), with baby being bulk billed.
This includes:
- Between 3–7 days post-delivery
A catch-up phone call with your midwife. This is an opportunity to ask those little questions you forgot before your hospital discharge, or discuss any concerns you may have about your new baby or your recovery. - 2 Weeks
In clinic check-up with your Midwife, including post delivery debrief & examination if required. Feeding and baby weight check. - 3 Weeks
In clinic check up with GP/GPO for post delivery debrief and examination as required. Baby checkup and progress including examination as required. Discusion and referral for further medical intervention and or investigation if required. - 4 Weeks
A catch-up phone call with your midwife. Checking Mum's recovery progress and baby's weight gain and feeding progress. This appointment can be swapped to a in clinic appointment, but private fees will apply. - 6 Weeks
In clinic check up - post-delivery recovery check up with your GP Obstetrician. - 6-8 Weeks
Baby's first immunisations.
Our GP Obstetricians may be on-call the day of your appointment. While we always aim to run on time, with Obstetrics this is sometimes not possible. Your Doctor may be called to attend a delivery at very short notice, resulting in a reschedule of your appointment at short notice. In some cases, your appointment might be rescheduled with another team member. We make every effort to reduce the disruption, however, we ask for your patience and understanding in these circumstances.
Don't forget to enrol your newborn with Medicare. The simplest way is to download the Medicare Express Plus App to your smart phone and select Enrol a Newborn.
If your newborn does not have a valid Medicare card on the day of your appointment, there will be a payable fee on the day. Most of this fee is covered by Medicare once your newborn has been registered.
